An honorarium is a voluntary payment given to a person for services for which fees are not legally or traditionally required. It may be used to help cover costs for volunteers or guest speakers and is considered taxable income. It is different from a per diem and is often provided for services that merit compensation but propriety prevents from requesting. An honorarium is taxable income, considered self-employment income by the IRS, and can have additional state tax implications for the speaker.
