The Prologue for Dust of Dreams contains a really interesting section that provides a clue as to how to approach the construction of the Malazan Book of the Fallen and that explains how we are meant to see and perceive the connective elements within the narrative.

The Prologues of Steven Erikson's MBotF contain some fascinating techniques, and this is one of the more overt articulations of how to approach thinking about, decoding, and understanding the MBotF.
