Bank Swallows are Aerial Insectivores, a group of birds that eat insects while flying. In Canada, Aerial Insectivores are declining at a steeper rate than any other bird group. Unfortunately, Bank Swallows are declining at the steepest rate within this bird group. The population has declined by 98% since 1970. More research is needed to understand why Bank Swallows are declining but likely causes are loss of habitat, declining insect populations, and climate change. It is not too late to help Bank Swallows persist into the future and you can help.
Heather Polowyk is the Bank Swallow Conservation Coordinator for Birds Canada. She has studied forest bird species at risk, monitored the foraging behaviour of Aerial Insectivores over wetlands, and assisted with a captive breeding program for Loggerhead Shrikes. Heather now coordinates the Atlantic Canada Bank Swallow Working Group, a group of stakeholders working together to help conserve Bank Swallow populations.
