Dell PowerEdge R230 | In our video we will dive into all the memory upgrade options for the Dell PowerEdge R230 server and show you how to properly configure and install your DIMMs. We will also provide a general overview of the R230 server as a whole. Part of the 13th generation server line from Dell, the PowerEdge R230 is an incredibly popular DDR4 based, single socket 1U server supporting Intel E3-1200 V5 or V6 series processors. Some other compatible CPUs include Intel Core i3 6100 Series, Intel Pentium G4500 or G4600 series as well as Intel Celeron G3900 series processors. However, we see E3-1200v5 series as the most common CPU, especially E3-1240v5 or E3-1270v5. (LGA1151 socket). This is the next generation to the R220 server.
The Dell PowerEdge R230 utilizes DDR4 memory and there are four DIMM slots. You can install only 1 type of memory inside your R230 server, which is ECC Unbuffered (Server UDIMM). Unfortunately, ECC Registered (RDIMMs) and Load Reduced (LRDIMMs) are not compatible with R230 servers. You can only utilize ECC Unbuffered memory, which is the only type of module supported. There are a range of speeds and sizes for the R230. Speed options include 2133MHz, 2400MHz or 2666MHz. However, it is worth noting 2666 will clock down to 2400. Size options include 2GB 4GB 8GB 16GB. Unfortunately 32GB DDR4 ECC Unbuffered modules are not compatible with the Dell R230 server line meaning the max configuration is 64GB via (4 x 16GB) DDR4 PC4-21300V-R 2666MHz ECC Unbuffered Server Memory. There are 2 Memory Channels, which equates to the R230 having two DIMM slots per memory channel. Dell has labeled the memory channels and they are also color coded. The beginning of the memory channel is the white DIMM slot. This is important if you were only loading two modules, then you would need to install the two DIMMs inside the two white DIMM slots. This will help your Dell R230 server to provide an even load distribution. Otherwise one channel is overloaded and the other channel is not being used. In our video, we will review this in more depth and demonstrate how to actually install your memory upgrade inside the Dell PowerEdge R230 server.
