During the webinar, the panelists, Ms. Edelfride Barbosa (Cape Verde), Mr. Stéphane Konan (Côte d'Ivoire), and Mr. Yann Le Cloarec (INTERPOL) discussed how the spread of digital technology is impacting transnational organized crime across Africa.
Panelists and participants highlighted the growth in transnational organized criminal networks who use to digital tools to commit financial crimes as a key area of concern. They also discussed how more traditional organized criminal enterprises like human smuggling and arms trafficking are beginning to exploit social media networks and various layers of the internet to trade in illicit goods and finance their activities.
To address this growing threat, panelists discussed the need for African countries to comply with existing organized crime treaties and conventions, to increase regional and international cooperation to monitor and prevent cyber-enabled organized crime, and to build capacity within the African legal sector to collect evidence and prosecute cyber-enabled organized crime.
