A high-speed commuter ferry carrying 326 passengers crashed Wednesday morning during rush hour as it neared a Wall Street pier injuring more than 70 people, police said. Passengers were knocked off their feet and down stairwells.
Two people were initially reported as in critical condition, but by Wednesday night, authorities said only one person remained in critical condition.
According to Reuters, riders who boarded the 141-foot Seastreak Wall Street in Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey were lined up to disembark in New York when the vessel struck the pier at 8:43am.
The ferry hit two slips and was traveling approximately 10-12 knots, about 11-15 mph, city officials said. The front of the ferry had a large gash due to the collision.
Seastreak ferries riders from ports in New Jersey to Pier 11, East 35th Street and World Financial Center, according to its website.
The National Transportation Safety Board announced it was sending a team to investigate the incident.
