The United States is moving towards lifting the ban on American military contractors deploying to Ukraine. The contractors would be helping maintain and repair US-provided systems. Currently, all heavily damaged equipment has to be sent out to Poland for repairs which takes forever. For routine maintenance, US troops help Ukrainians via video chat and phone call but this obviously has limitations. With one official saying “Allowing experienced, US government-funded American contractors to maintain a presence in Ukraine means they will be able to help fix damaged, high-value equipment much faster.” This is thought to be a move meant to preempt the F-16s arrival which will require regular maintenance. US officials have stressed though that this won’t be Iraq or Afghanistan where there were more contractors than grains of sand in the universe. They expect to only send a few dozen to a couple hundred contractors.
