Two lions engage in a mating bout in Uganda’s Ishasha sector (with a cub eager to play in the background!). A pair of lions like this one can easily mate close to 100 times in a 24 hour cycle. The repeated mating bouts are necessary because lions are induced ovulators, meaning that they need external stimuli in order to release the luteinizing hormone. As this builds with repeated copulation the lioness can then release an egg. Every lion cub one observes in the wild is the result of hundreds if not thousands of such mating bouts. Filmed with @thegentle_indifference and @jimmy.kisembo for @natgeowild 🐆
