For more than a decade, BJ the Chicago Kid has displayed an unparalleled ability to wind his way around complex grooves. He’s the wise beat shopper who can pick out left-of-center arrangements that’ll hold the mainstream’s attention. Check “Church” with Chance the Rapper and Buddy, from 2016’s GRAMMY-nominated ‘In My Mind.’ For an R&B jam with 30+ million streams it’s sparse as hell, populated with backwards synth samples and stutter stops. “Turning Me Up,” meanwhile, exemplifies the Windy City native’s penchant for snappy percussion. His next album, ‘1123,’ was more sumptuous, not only in its production but its imagery of soul-food, good drinks, and good weed. And there it is again on ‘Gravy,’ the soul singer’s latest project. Notably, he’s trying out an uplighting pop sound these days. “Oh you taste sweet,” his falsetto attests in the Chlöe-assisted “Honey.” When we invited him to our studio, he brought his duet partner as a surprise guest, and their ensuing performance really elevated the track’s joyful sensuality.
