English Translation
I am the new voice
of the old song
that never dies
I am like a sparrow
that wants to sing to you
for the first time
Allow me to nest
by singing this vals** to you
as you wish
I am the new voice
that have requested from God
to sing to my Peru
like a goldfinch,
to be able to say
that today I start to live
by telling to Peru
how much I love "him*"
I bring to you in my song
the old tradition
which was written by Palma***
Receive it in my voice
and put it lovingly
inside your soul
I am the people's voice
that wants to sing
to all those things that are ours
with the same fervor
and with the same love
that I feel while praying, in front of an altar,
My Lord´s Prayer
I am the new voice
that from the bottom of my heart
and at the beat of a bass string
offers you its soul.
I bring that banner
that Pinglo**** left to us
in each heart, I am
I am the New Generation*****

*The song refers to Perú as a person, in this case a he (for the article used before the noun in Spanish). It denotes stronger feelings towards our country than referring to Peru as an 'it'.
**vals=waltz. I maintained its Spanish writing because the Peruvian waltz is indeed different to the European waltz that it is danced in big ballrooms and involves the use of lager steps.
***Ricardo Palma: a Peruvian writer that created a new style of writing called Tradición (tradition). His master piece is entitled "Tradiciones Peruanas" (Peruvian Traditions) that compile all the customs, believes, and stories from popular origin of the colonial and republican Peru.
****Felipe Pinglo Alva: a prolific peruvian composer that died in 1936. He mainly produced valses and polkas, some of which have social nature. He revolutionized the creole music.
*****Guardia Nueva: represents the new artists, a second generation of composers and singers of 'criolla' music (popular Peruvian music: valses, polkas, etc) that's why I translated it as the New Generation.
