Steps to Success for Multiple-Choice on the ELA CC Regents
1) Read and annotate the questions
a. Underline the location of the answers in the question
b. Circle the keywords in the question. Ask yourself:
i. What information are you looking for?
ii. What are the content words in the question?
2) Annotate the text
a. Circle the part of the text that the question pertains to
b. Write the question # and the key words next to the circled part
c. Shade out the rest lightly
3) Read the text
a. 1st time (3 to 5 min) – Read the introductory sentence/the glossary/skim the text for 3 to 5 minutes
b. 2nd time (5 min) – Focus on the circled parts. While reading…
i. Circle words that relate to what the question is about
ii. Determine the overall “charge” of the text (positive? negative? neutral/informational?)
4) Eliminate at least 2 answers
a. Too negative/too positive depending on the charge of the text
b. Contain words/phrases unrelated to the article
c. True, but does not answer the question
d. Contain words that indicate 100% of the time (always, never, completely, totally, absolutely)
5) Choose the answer out of the 2 left based on evidence from the text.
NEVER GUESS!
Good luck!! Let me know if you guys have any questions!
