Normally a person who has transplant, we suggest certain diet restrictions and smoking is definitely is not allowed and alcohol is a different story. alcohol per se will not damage the kidney. When alcohol taken in moderation will be okay. Infact there are some theories that if you take red wine, it is good for the heart. But if you drink alcohol more, it can damage the liver and it can cause problem. Alcohol can also add to the calories and you can have obesity. So somebody who is having only alcohol and not taking proper diet, it can have other implications. Alcohol per se cannot have any direct effect on the kidney transplantation, but by and large we tell our patients who want to drink alcohol to drink in moderation and be aware that they have had a transplant. That is important. But by per se, alcohol is not contraindicated, especially in the western world, lot of people who have had transplant, they do drink wine and it is even accepted and some of them even say that wine is good for health. But in India, scenario is different, because we do not know how to drink in moderation and we request our patients to be careful, talk to their doctors before deciding on alcohol.
