Ep. 123 FINISHING THE COSMOS MOSAIC AND TWO FLORAL ATC'S!
Welcome to my studio! I jump into the Cosmos mosaic and finish laying in the lower background with glass including a tree area behind the left flower. Once the Weldbond has dried for at least 24 hours, I use Spectralock I Pre-mixed grout in natural gray to grout the glass areas and fill in the background so I can paint it! I am experimenting with adding lines to the grout to give the flowers movement.
At the same time, I go ahead and grout two little ATCs (Artist Trading Cards) so I can finish them.
Following the directions carefully, I gently wipe the glass using a circular motion to remove the surface grout. I do a bit of tapping the big sponge gently on the large sky area to smooth it out.
Instead of waiting a full 45-60 minutes, I come back after 30 minutes to carve the lines with a thin tool. I gingerly press the tool into the grout rather than push it through as I want a smooth edge. It is still really soft, but it holds its shape just fine without slumping back into the groove.
Then I give it another 15 minutes and try it again - wait, WHAT? So much easier!!! Grout is still soft enough to easily carve the lines, but not so squishy. In the meantime, I finish cleaning up the grout haze off the ATCs.
Finally I can clean off the haze on the Cosmos mosaic and WOW - so satisfying to see it.
Next I take my supplies outside and using a soft palette to match the gorgeous stained glass base, I start building the flower bouquet. I use a piece from a ceramic bowl for the vase, and add buttons and a glass gem to give it some interest, texture and height. Then I add a bunch of silk rosebuds in a cream color. Lastly, I add some donated pearls and beads.
A few days later I am able to paint the background on the cosmos! Using acrylic paints, I mix some greens for the ground and add in the moody sky with its soft grays, whites and pops of blue. The background is out of focus, so the edges are very soft and I'm able to use paint to soften the edges between the glass and the sky. This is very satisfying because it can be difficult to achieve a soft edge just using glass. Finally, I take a look at it and the lines give it movement and the smears of pink give the impression of swaying. Looks so different up close than it does from across the room.
The second ATC is going to have blues, dark ceramic and pops of orange. I use Apoxie Sculpt to attach the ceramic vase and the blue flower. This allows me to angle the petals for more dimension. Off camera I am making a mess with the E6000. It keeps getting on my hands and all over!!! I have to stop and wash my hands and clean up the glue oozing all over. FINISHED!
Or am I?!?!?! I forgot to add some orange leaves. This time I use GE II Silicone so I don't have to deal with E6000. NOW it's done! I love it!
That's Putting It Together Ep. 123! Thanks for watching. See you next time!
