This talk discusses why languages change over time, and examines this through two aspects - grammar (inflectional morphology) and sound shifts (Grimm's law). It focuses on the process of reconstructing old languages and pattern recognition when the written script does not provide any clues (i.e. Chinese). This talk attempts to answer questions regarding the relevance of old languages, and how machine translations have worked over the years.
