Wedding Traditions In Canada.
Traditionally, weddings in Canada take place in a church with family and friends invited as guests. There’s a priest that presides the ceremony. In the end, he asks if anyone present at the wedding knows why, for whatever reason, the man and the woman may not be married. If nobody speaks up, the priest continues with the ceremony by asking for an exchange of wedding rings between the bride and groom. Finally, he pronounces them husband and wife.

In this video, I will talk about the unique wedding traditions that are observed in Canada. Let’s find out how many of these traditions you are aware of and if there are any that are comparable to your own.
Wearing a white wedding gown.
The tradition of wearing white gowns by the bride started in Europe many decades ago. Since then, white wedding gowns are considered as the standard for all Western weddings.
Pre-wedding meeting at the bride’s house.
According to an old French-Canadian tradition, the groom and his convoy of friends go to the bride’s and her parents’ house. They take a train of cars together, honking and shouting in celebration, as a way to get the party started.
Throwing a bridal shower.
Prior to the day of the wedding, the Maid of Honor throws a bridal shower as part of the wedding ceremony. In this tradition, the bride-to-be receives small gifts which are often humorous in nature.
Trousseau Tea partying.
This tea party is a great way to celebrate an upcoming wedding in the family. The mother of the bride invites friends, colleagues and close neighbors to the party. Guests watch in excitement as the mother of the bride lays out the bride’s wedding trousseau and the bridal shower gifts. This tradition is now slowly fading.
Funny socks dancing.
This tradition is participated by the unmarried siblings of the bride and groom. What they do is they wear funny socks and perform a dance. While dancing, the wedding guests throw money at them. The money is collected and given to the couple as a wedding gift.
Wedding wheel dancing.
Another tradition that aims to help pay for the wedding day is known as the Wedding Wheel. Guests at the wedding would line up and pay a dollar or even more to have their turn in dancing with the bride or groom. The money is also used to help pay for the honeymoon.
Shoe dancing.
Usually performed by the bride, shoe dancing is an alternative to the Wedding Wheel dancing. The bride dances
around the dance floor while wedding guests fill her shoes with money. More recently, the bride uses a drawstring bag which is more practical and a better idea as more money can fit in.
The Wedding Toast.
This is that part of the wedding where everyone gets to express their feelings and love for the bride and groom. The couple also gets their turn to speak and talk about their love and gratitude to the special people in their life. This tradition can be interesting as the bride and groom would also speak about successful couples who have influenced their marriage or have been supportive of their journey as a couple.
Out of all these traditions, wearing a white bridal gown remains popular in Canadian weddings. Some brides dare to wear wedding dress silhouettes and bare more skin in their gowns which is also acceptable, of course.
Which of these traditions do you find the most interesting and why? Let us know in the comment box below.
