Using Rawhide as a protective brace for axe handles to prevent damage in overstrikes compared to, leather, paracord, sheet metal, etc.. Rawhide is my favorite material for prophylactic handle protection so far. It is very compressive, low profile, similar in texture to the wood, completely form fitting, I can make it myself and it looks awesome! There are numerous options for protecting handles from damage near the eye. Leather, wire, cord wraps and tape are all common. Rawhide is my personal favorite so far. It is tough, beautiful, tight, form fitting and I can make it myself. it is also pretty close to "invisible" to my hand when handling the axe near the head where the balance point is. Everyone should handle their axe near the head frequently and there should be no signfican't texture or thickness there to hinder that. I sew mine on with sinew thread using a subcutaneous stitch. Hide glue made from boiled bits of skin or tendons is used underneath the brace. Once dry it can be oiled with linseed oil, though the jury is still out on how that affects strength and toughness.
