I have been dyeing and painting silk ties and scarves since 2004. I prefer dyeing over painting scarves because dyes become part of the fabric and leave the silk luxuriously soft. But dyes won't show up on black, so using fabric paint opens up a new range of possibilities on black, with rich, beautiful contrast between the black background and the vibrant fabric paint colors.
Also, ties shrink and get out of shape when dyed, but fabric paints are set by ironing, so no shrinking occurs and the tie stays flat. While dyeing ties is quite a challenge, painting them is fairly easy.
