Six Month Smiles. Six Month Smiles or Six Month Braces is a fantastic way for adults to get straight teeth without really being comprehensive. It's not a replacement for comprehensive orthodontics because the goals are different.
Six Month Smiles was developed or enhanced when a dentist was doing braces for some adult patients and usually by six months, he noticed his adult patients were asking to take the braces off or saying, "Okay, we're done, correct?" And he had to explain that, no, there is still is another 18 months, two years to go because they were trying to fix the bite and change the root angulations and other things. And he found that most of his adult patients just didn't care, they just wanted the front teeth, their smile, to be improved and despite the incomplete treatment or the imperfections or the lack of perfection that was achieved at that point, they were okay with that.
What he decided to do was find out, perhaps there was a market for those that wanted, maybe, a little discount, maybe two-thirds the fee of comprehensive braces and the average tended to be six months, sometimes they were four months, sometimes it was eight months but the average was about six months of treatment.
The teeth aren't moving any faster. Some of the concerns people express are: if you move teeth too fast, that the roots get resorbed or there can be other complications. The teeth aren't moving any faster than normal. We're using brackets and wires, they are tooth-colored brackets and wires so they're almost as invisible as Invisalign but not quite.
The best description I can come up with is it's similar to, if you were to go see a James Bond movie. Now if you remember a James Bond movie, they start off with an opening scene, an opening sequence and then the opening credits happen. It's as if you're looking through a gun barrel, someone gets shot, blood trickles down on the screen and then they have the opening song and all the credits, and then the movie begins. If you were to stop watching at that point, you didn't watch the entire movie in fast forward, you didn't see the whole thing, you just saw the first part and then stopped.
The same kind of thing is happening here with Six Months Smiles. We're just doing the first part of treatment, we're not completing treatment so if you have an overbite, and you’d still have an overbite. If you had a root that had an imperfect angle, you'd probably still have an imperfect angle. We're going to be tipping the teeth but we're not going to be changing the position of the entire root, so it's more rotational than anything.
So we offer, in our office, Six Month Smiles as an alternative to those that just don't want to go through all the time and expense that comprehensive ortho is. Now, if you were a teenager and had the opportunity for comprehensive braces, I think you should go see an orthodontist first but if you've already talked to an orthodontist and you decided that's just not for you, then Six Month Braces might be the solution for you. If you're an adult that just doesn't want to go through all that or if you're an adult that is planning to do veneers and you don't want to be very aggressive with your crowns and veneers, we can do pre-prosthetic orthodontics. If we move the teeth first, we can be a lot more conservative in the treatment that we offer.
