In 1918, Germany was a defeated nation, suffering from terrible economic problems and communist uprisings. Many groups sought to exploit this to gain power, one such group was the NSDAP, or National Socialist German Workers Party. State employee Adolf Hitler was sent to infiltrate and destroy the group in 1919 only to find the groups message eerily similar to his own and found himself joining the party as a legitimate member. In 1923 he urged the group to rise up and overtake Germany as his Italian counterpart Mussolini had done, and though he failed and was imprisoned, gained a frightening amount of popularity. In 1929, Germany and the wider world suffered a terrible economic collapse, and by 1933 Hitler had taken over the country as dictator and pushed the country towards war.
