The Panzer IV was developed before WWII as an infantry support tank. The later in the war however it's better upgrade potential made it the main medium tank of the German army as it's sibling the Panzer III reached the end it's potential.
The Panzer IV was the only German tank that was in service in WWII from the beginning until the end.
