I remember singing the Mahishasura Mardini stotram with my mother as a young girl in Bangalore. She would always tell me the significance of this longer and more difficult to perform bhajan and I would like to share that with everyone watching. This Stotra is a beautiful story of our Goddess Durga has she slays the Asura Mahishasura who had taken the form of a water buffalo, hence “Mahish Asura”.
What makes this performance of her Stotra so powerful to me is the vivid descriptions of our Goddess’ beauty, prowess, and divinity. The verses and poetry employed are beyond compare and the use of devices such as alliteration (the occurrence of the same letter over and over again) is breathtaking. A real tongue twister that takes hours, if not a lifetime to perfect.
Each Sanskrit Sloka has 92 syllables divided by 4 lines of 23 syllables each. This form of poetic meter is called Shravanabharanam.
