Atherosclerosis in 30 Seconds | Angina | LDL Cholesterol and Arterial Plaque
See how atherosclerosis is building up in the arteries and why the heart patient gets angina (chest pain).
We all have a protective layer on the artery walls called the endothelium. As we eat our standard diet, saturated fat, cholesterol and animal protein all contribute to raising our serum cholesterol and our "bad" cholesterol LDL. After a fatty meal the blood, the endothelium and LDL Cholesterol, everything gets sticky, and so LDL particles can invade the sub endothelial space and that creates an arterial plaque. As the plaque grows, over time, more and more of the artery gets increasingly clogged until symptoms are experienced (often when it's 70% clogged), such as angina (chest pain), fatigue and general malfunction of various systems of the body. This state could lead to a fatal heart attack at any given moment.
That's why LDL Cholesterol is associated in the scientific literature with a higher risk for atherosclerosis and heart disease. The good news is that in many cases heart disease can be arrested and even reversed!
