The Michigan Womyn's Music Festival originated as a festival that served as a space for mostly queer women to gather and enjoy several nights of live music and workshops away from the iron grip of patriarchy they're forced to endure in their daily lives. However, after several years of reported incidents where attendees and the festival committee seriously endangered trans women who attended, the festival began to reveal itself to be not as "safe" as it appeared. Today we will explore why incidents like this are so pervasive in women-only spaces and clear up misconceptions on the reporting surrounding the annual festival.
