Not counting the early works like the Zdenka Variations, Janáček has composed all his important piano compositions in 1900-1912. This fifteen-part cycle is divided in two volumes. The first one contains ten pieces and is well-known, while the second is relatively troublesome – discussions are held whether or not should it be performed in its entirety as Janáček has not even approved of all these pieces and three out of five of them were completed by his editors. In the early stage of composition these pieces were intended for harmonium instead of piano, but that was changed as more of them were added.
