Slow down back from where you actually want to stop, and then creep up to where you actually want the vehicle to stop.
If you wait until the actual spot where you want to stop it may be slippery and you may not get stopped.
Some times however, you're going to get "caught out" at an intersection and it is going to be far more slippery than you imagined.
And the brake pedal is depressed to the floor, the ABS are grinding, and the vehicle is NOT stopping.
When the vehicle won't stop, begin to move the vehicle either left or right to find traction.
Often the vehicle will get traction outside of the tracks where the other vehicles have created a path.
On rural highways, some times you might even need to move the vehicle off the main travelled section of the roadway and onto the shoulder to find traction.
In the event that the vehicle won't find traction, and you have to hit something to bring the vehicle to a stop - aim for something small.
A hedge, shallow ditch, or road sign are far more preferable to a tree, a boulder or another vehicle. Plan strategically when your unable to get the vehicle stopped on icy conditions.
Before winter sets in, equip your vehicle with good quality winter tires, and ensure that your wiper blades and in good condition.
As well, before departing during snow and ice, ensure that the windshield washer fluid is topped up.
Finally, when the temperature is near 0°C or 32°F, know that the roads are going to be more slippery than if it were sub-zero temperatures.
Brake early and increase your following distance when the temperatures are near the freezing point.
