Kenya will lead 31 other countries in pushing for the listing of African elephants in Appendix 1 of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora -CITES.
The Convention's 18th Conference of the Parties - CoP18 - starts in Geneva tomorrow. Southern African countries have submitted a proposal to allow trade in elephant trophies, hides, and leather goods.
Kenya argues that listing the African elephant in Appendix one will protect their dwindling numbers from poachers. As part of the campaign, Kenya's National carrier, Kenya Airways has printed 400- thousand limited-edition boarding passes with the message: "Trade of ivory is ripping Kenya apart". Sarah Kimani reports.
