All people produce both estrogen and testosterone throughout their lives. Before puberty, children have relatively low levels of both hormones. During puberty, estrogen increases in people assigned female, as does testosterone in those assigned male. In this video from Berklee Online’s Essentials of Teaching Contemporary Voice course, instructor Clare McLeod examines the six stages of voice maturation: early mutation, high mutation, mutational climax, post-mutation stabilization, post-mutations settling, and development. This video showcases how refining our understanding of these stages in voice development may help singers come to terms with the changes associated with them. The biggest changes occur in the first three stages, which may take up to around 14 months for some singers. The beginning of puberty is more variable in the US than Europe, though there are no agreed upon explanations for this. While the onset of puberty triggered by hormone secretions and growth rates are highly individual, the stages of change are predictable and sequential. Puberty can be a tough transition for the singer, because your brain will try to sing in a manner that doesn’t accommodate the changes your body is going through. Your brain has to eventually adapt to these changes (and that takes time and practice!). It’s important to understand these changes and how they can affect your voice, in order to adapt to puberty in a healthy way.
