The Gibson Les Paul Custom Lite is a great alternative for someone whose back cannot take the full weight of a Les Paul Custom and wants a guitar that is a bit more ergonomic for us rounder folk. These customs are about the width of an SG to give you an idea of its thickness. They also do not have binding on the back of the instrument and instead have a 'comfort cut.'
The Gibson Les Paul Custom lite was reintroduced in 2013 as a limited edition run of 250 guitars in a Black finish. These guitars sold very well so Gibson decided to do them again in 2014.
The 2014 version is less desirable since they have the crown emblem instead of the custom emblem on the headstock, but are essentially the same guitars. These were offered in Black, Tobacco Sunburst, White and Wine Red finishes.
In 2016, Gibson did their final run of these guitars and brought back the custom emblem and did away with the coil split switch. These guitars were wired with 2 volumes and 2 tones like a traditional Les Paul. This is why the 2016s generally sell for the most. Only White and Black finishes were available.
Before all of that, these guitars were introduced in the late 80s. These are also very nice guitars and have ebony fretboards - whereas none of the 2000s models did. Black, Tobacco Sunburst, Cherry Sunburst, Sunset Metallic, Silverburst, and a limited edition of 200 Gold tops were some of the finishes that were available.
All 4 of these distinctive Gibson Les Paul Custom lite models are great guitars. I would personally rank them - 1980s, 2016, 2013 and then 2014 based on aesthetics, tradition and features - but in reality, they both play fairly similarly.
