Ham the Astrochimp, was the first Great Ape launched into space. On January 31, 1961, Ham flew a suborbital flight. After being recovered from the sea was greeted and made a famous "handshake" welcome with the ship Commander. The Mercury-Redstone 2 capsule carried Ham to space. His flight was 16 minutes and 39 seconds long. Ham died on January 19, 1983, and was buried at the New Mexico Museum of Space History in Alamogordo.
