STORYLINE:
Japanese Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko paid their respects to the Filipino war dead during a visit on Wednesday to the Heroes' Cemetery in the Manila suburb of Taguig.
The Imperial couple laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier following a ceremony there.
Previously known as the Republic Memorial Cemetery, and also now officially known as Libingan ng mga Bayani, the cemetery was established by the Philippine government in 1947 to pay tribute to Filipino soldiers who fought in World War II.
Before leaving Tokyo for Manila on Tuesday, Akihito said his nation must remember the tremendous loss of life in the Philippines in World War II.
The 1945 battle for Manila between Japan and allied US and Philippine forces levelled the capital city and left more than 100,000 dead, according to Philippine historians.
On Friday, Akihito is expected to visit a memorial for the Japanese war dead in Cavinti, Laguna which is south of Manila.
