The first of what would end up being two legendary nights, Oasis play in Maine Road in Manchester. Playing in their home team’s football stadium in their home town, you can guarantee the atmosphere to be electric. The audience sing along or stomp up and down to every song and speaking of the songs, the setlist is incredibly packed tonight. Several songs are introduced, such as The Masterplan which sounds incredible during this period with the full band. As well as this, only for these two Maine Road nights have the band playing their cover of Cum On Feel The Noize, which ends the show. Liam does struggle on the high notes (so does Noel with his backing vocals) but it sounds massive nonetheless. Strangely enough though while setlist sheets had it written down, Shakermaker wasn’t played on either of these two nights. Security had to be upped around these nights as there were threats that Liam was going to be kidnapped (which he mentions before Hello) The audio is sourced from another Thieving Magpie Remaster, but unfortunately I uploaded the video with Cast No Shadow which got the video blocked, so i’ve had to re-upload without it, sorry! (A link to that rendition is below the setlist, as it was released on the 2014 reissue of What’s The Story (Morning Glory)).
As for the performance, it is easily seen as one of the best Oasis had ever done and it’s hard to disagree. Both nights have their strengths and weaknesses and overall I’d say the second night has higher highs but this night is a bit more consistent, so whichever matters to you more counts. Either way, Liam sounds fantastic here pulling off one of his best shows of the year doing very well on songs like Hello and Some Might Say and has plenty of banter to spit out. This is also quite a historical moment for him as he gets to sing both Cast No Shadow and Wonderwall for the first time tonight. Why this hadn’t happened sooner is a mystery, but it’s fair to say both songs are fantastic renditions despite this. The band too sound good throughout, dripping with passion as the enthusiastic audience powers them on and they all seem to be having a very good time.
