In this guitar lesson, we'll be looking at the major scale and I'll be showing you how you can use guitar scale sequences to bring more to your major scale patterns and stop your solos from sounding like scale runs. The first set of scale sequences will be intervallic in nature. You will play through the major scale in note pairs which will be a certain interval (or distance) apart, all whilst staying strictly within the scale (known as a diatonic sequence).
I’d recommend initially focusing on diatonic thirds and fifths. A combination of the thirds and fifths will allow you to play through the major scale pattern in diatonic triad arpeggios. In doing so you are defining the notes of each three-note triad within the key derived from the scale.
The other type of scale sequence is widely known as a number sequence, in which you play a certain number of notes in a specific direction. The two classic guitar exercises here are 3-in-a-row and 4-in-a-row.

The thing to consider with guitar sequences, particularly those from intervals, is that the intervals can work in either direction, creating several sequencing possibilities.
For all of these guitar scale sequence exercises, I would recommend you approach them with alternate picking, in which you strictly alternate the picking direction, down-up-down-up... Doing so gives a great workout for the picking hand, especially as you explore the wider interval sequences.
