In recent years there has been a surge in illegal trade in wildlife, now estimated at 20 billion US dollars a year. Driven by organised criminal groups, it affects not only wildlife but also the sustainable development of communities. John E Scanlon, Secretary-General of CITES (the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), explains how technology can help, from surveillance drones to sensors and apps allowing people to report suspicious activity.
