Key Verse:
*** Key Verse:
Malachi 3:8
Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions.
*** Tithing in the New Testament:
Mark 12:41–44
41 And he sat down opposite the treasury and watched the people putting money into the offering box. Many rich people put in large sums. 42 And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. 43 And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. 44 For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.”
Acts 2:44–45
44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need.
1 Corinthians 9:14
14 In the same way, the Lord commanded that those who proclaim the gospel should get their living by the gospel.
1 Corinthians 16:2
2 On the first day of every week, each of you is to put something aside and store it up, as he may prosper, so that there will be no collecting when I come.
2 Corinthians 9:7
7 Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver.

You work hard for your money right? But, when that plate is passed around at Church, the last thing you want - is to feel guilty, or pressured to give. So, what does the Bible actually say about Tithes and offering? And, what’s our responsibility today? In Malachi 3:8 it reads, Will man rob God? Yet you are robbing me. But you say, ‘How have we robbed you?’ In your tithes and contributions. That verse is often used to say that we are commanded to give 10%, which is what tithe means. So are we robbing God is we don’t tithe 10%? Not according to Old Testament.
The Old Testament actually commands not one, but three different tithes. One tenth went to support the Priests, another tenth for sacred Festivals, and every three years, another tenth was collected to support Widows, Orphans, and the poor. Over three years that averages to, 23.3% a year. That was the Old Testament law. But, we are not in the Old Testament, right? So, what does tithing in the New Testament look like?
2 Corinthians 9:7 says, Each one must give as he has decided in his heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. The New Testament never commands a specific amount to be given to the Church, instead it was a heart decision. What did that look like? It looked like generous love. Weekly collections were given to the Church, so the Gospel could go out. Jesus once saw a poor woman offer 100% of all she had, he commends her faith. Even when people didn’t have any money to give, they sold their stuff so that they could give. They gave out of love, not legalism. They gave because it pleased God. They gave because physical and eternal lives were on the line. They gave all they could, knowing God gave all he could to us, through Jesus. We should do the same. That’s today’s Bible Munch.
