After the recent Balasore Train accident, a lot of people started talking about the Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS), also branded as Kavach System. I heard a lot of people saying that installing the Kavach System in the train tracks of Odisha could have avoided the tragedy.
However, do you really know how this system works?
The TCAS or Kavach System has 3 major sub-systems: the Station TCAS, the Loco TCAS, and RFID Tags installed in the railway tracks. The RFID reader of the Loco scans the RFID tags of the train tracks. This then sends information to the Station TCAS. GPS is not used as it is not much precise. However, in the future, a 4G LTE-based Kavach System is planned to be implemented.
Let's see what the Ministry of Railways and our Honorable Railway Ashwini Vaishnaw have in their mind!
