The 11th Grammy Award show was conducted on 12 March 1969, at Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles. The Academy recognized the artists for their outstanding performance for the year 1968. The hosts who took over the stage for the ceremony were Dan Rowan and Dick Martin. Glen Campbell, The Beatles and Dionne Warwick were the artists mostly nominated for the year. Jose Feliciano, Mason Williams and Johnny Cash were the artists who were honored with highest number of Grammy Awards. The esteemed Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Irving Berlin...*(some of the categories at the very bottom.).
This week 50 years ago, here is the Billboard Top 10 albums in the nation...The Beatles ruled the Album chart for a fifth week with "The White Album" while "TCB" by Diana Ross & the Supremes with the Temptations was second. And although Glen Campbell was at #3 with "Wichita Lineman" he'll be back at #1 in a couple of weeks again! (As he was already #1 'round Xmas-time), Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 had "Fool on the Hill" and the Rolling Stones were stuck at #5 with "Beggars Banquet". Diana Ross & the Supremes Join the Temptations at #6, Iron Butterfly moved from 12-#7 with "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida", Big Brother & the Holding Company with Janis had "Cheap Thrills" at #8, Judy Collins was at #9 with "Wildflowers" in its 56th week of release, and Steppenwolf's "The Second" was #10...
I have just made a special find & upload of a little sliver of the Grammy's from 51 years ago! The opening with Rowen & Martin, Timex Commercial, Bobbie Gentry & Lou Rawls intro Glen Campbell performing "Wichita Lineman", then Burt Bacharach intros Dionne Warwick with "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" & ending with Mama Cass (from The Mamas & The Papas) intro for The Beatles & "Hey Jude", unfortunately You-Tube would not allow me to play "Hey Jude". :-( sorry folks. However, this is some great historic footage I have here, found deep in The Diamond Mine, ~ part of Phoenix Rising: The Glen Campbell Archives...
