Iron Mountain Loop Hike - Iron Mountain is one of my favorite hikes! This hike is a favorite because it offers stunning views, beautiful wildflowers, a soft trail, and it is easy to navigate. Additionally, with the exception of a few exposed wild flowered hillsides, the hike is well canopied for protection from the sun.
The adventure begins at “Tombstone Pass” parking lot, just off of Highway 20. At the south end of the parking lot, you will come to a trail marker on your left, Tombstone Prairie Trail #3420, which is just beyond the restrooms. Take this trail, which will lead you to Cone Peak Trail #3408. At .59 miles you will arrive at the highway, where you will cross to the other side. After you cross the highway, there will be a trailhead marker that says Cone Peak Trailhead #3408. Proceed along this trail and you will be treated to an incredible array of wildflowers and a direct view of Cone Peak. Soon, you will get a glimpse of Iron Mountain and at 3.97 miles you will come to a junction where Cone Peak Trail #3408 meets Iron Mountain Trail #3389. Turn left at the junction, which will lead you directly to the top of Iron Mountain. From this point, you will climb .81 miles to the top, and it is here where the incline is the greatest, which will culminate with a total ascent of 1,634’ (Tombstone Parking Lot to the top of Iron Mountain). The views from the top are incredible, as Mt. Jefferson, The Three Sisters Mountains, Three Finger Jack, and a host of unincumbered landscapes will come into view. There is a large wooden platform, which previously served as a lookout tower, where you could relax and take in the awesome views. As you head down the mountain, you will come to the same junction. However, this time, turn left onto the Iron Mountain Trail #3389 and in .69 miles, you will be back at highway 20. Just as before, cross Highway 20 and you will see a trail. Turn left on the trail and in a very short distance, you will see a trail marker that says Tombstone Pass Parking lot 1 mile. Follow this trail to the parking lot which will close out this moderate hike at 7.28 miles with a cumulative elevation gain of 1,825’.
Hiking Tips – Insect repellent is a must, as the mosquitos are out in great numbers. Take plenty of water, as summer temperatures are tracking will above average, and remaining hydrated is a must. Packing a nice lunch to relax on the top of the mountain will be a nice reward for the heart thumping experience of getting there. Lastly, make sure you display your forest pass on the dashboard of your vehicle, or you will be ticketed.
I hope you enjoy the pictures and the video of the hike, have fun!
