The Citicorp Center had a major structural defect, and it is a fascinating story with many twists and turns, and unlike saviour with a race against time to rectify the building before it collapses. The Citicorp Center Crisis is also an engineering ethics case study. The Citicorp Center's design flaw was only discovered by an engineering student asking questions.
The Citicorp Center is now known as 601 Lexington, it was designed by a world-renowned engineer William LeMessurier. The structural design of the Citicorp building had one major design flaw and it was overlooked until a undergraduate Architectural student Diane Hartley was assigned the Citicorp centre as a call project. While reviewing the unique design of the Citicorp tower Diane was intrigued by the tower unique and defining feature and how it was built over the St. Peter's Lutheran Church on the north-west corner. She realised that the Citicorp had a design flaw with its capability to quartering winds and wanted to know how the structural design overcame this structural design issue. Diane Hartley called the lead structural engineer William LeMessurier and this call lead to the discovery that the design of Citicorp centre had a dangerous design flaw and required the building to be strengthened.
