Elise Mertens fought back from a set down to knock two-time former champion Simona Halep out of the Madrid Open on Tuesday.
Third seed Halep, a four-time finalist in Madrid, squandered an early break, but tamed Mertens' serve again in the seventh game on the way to taking the opening set 6-4.
Seven breaks were traded in the second set, with Mertens claiming the last on a love game to level the match.
The 13th seed also forced a break of serve in the 12th game of the deciding set - although Halep put up more of a fight second time around - and completed a 5-6, 7-5, 7-5 victory in two hours and 34 minutes.
Mertens beat Halep for the second time in six career meetings, setting up a quarter-final clash with fifth seed Aryna Sabalenka.
