Up in the northern parts of Canada there’s a species of bear that is mostly white, with some patches of brown fur. It’s not a grizzly bear, it’s not a polar bear, it’s a mixture of the two. Scientists like to call them Grolars or Pizzly Bears, and they’re what’s known as a hybrid species.
Hybrid Species occur when two different species get together and make babies. But often there are many biological factors stopping these species occuring.
The factors are split into two categories, pre-zygotic and post-zygotic mechanisms. Pre-zygotic is everything that happens before an animal gets pregnant, whereas post-zygotic is everything that happens once the baby is born.
Combining two different species can create lots of problems, and often it has to do with an animals DNA. DNA is a bit like our bodies instruction manual. It lives in our cells and tells each cell what it should be. One might become muscle tissue, the other might build our brain. DNA has to match up really precisely for it to work properly, but when 2 different species try to make babies well the instructions become muddled.
So, what would happen if humans combined with another species? Could we create human-animal hybrids?
