The Mercury Sable was marketed as sophisticated and stylish. They were really good cars. The introduction of the Ford Taurus / Mercury Sable began the first generation of well-made front-drive mid-size family sedans from Ford. This car platform is one of Ford's best moves in history. GM would reinvent the Buick Regal, Oldsmobile Cutlass as front wheel drive in 1988. Chevy's rear-drive Monte Carlo was replaced with the front-drive Chevy Lumina in 1988 as well. Most car guys were happy with rear drive, and didn't like front-drive platforms. It made the cars harder to work on. But looking back, it's amazing how comfortable we were with the less-safe rain / snow traction problems of rear drive.
