Akhenaten was an ancient Egyptian pharaoh reigning c. 1353–1336 or 1351–1334 BC, the tenth ruler of the Eighteenth Dynasty. During his reign, he put into place new religious policies that completely erased the old gods of Egypt and replaced them with the new sun god, Aten. This new religion is one of the earliest forms of monotheism in the world. Akhenaten was seen as a fairly unpopular ruler due to his religious reforms, and it was under his son, Tutankhamun that the older traditions were restored.
