It’s no surprise that Caldwell Police and other departments across the United States respond to calls when someone threatens suicide. What might surprise you is how often. Suicide rates increased by 36% between 2000–2021. Suicide was responsible for 48,183 deaths in 2021, which is about one death every 11 minutes.
These calls are one of the most difficult and emotional calls our officers can experience. It’s never a call we want to take on, and we always hope for a successful outcome. This video shows one call that is one of the success stories. In the weeks following this incident, we’ve stayed in touch with this family as they navigate the aftermath.
Suicidal thoughts, much like mental health conditions, can affect anyone regardless of age, gender, or background. If you feel like completely giving up or are having thoughts of suicide, there is help out there. Please call or text 988. YOU ARE NOT ALONE.
