The anchorage in La Paz Mexico is notorious for strong currents and apposing winds, commonly known as the LaPaz Waltz. Many boats drag during strong winds and tidal shifts here.
Anchoring in strong tidal currents can be a challenge, but it's essential for sailors who want to stay safe and secure. There are a few things you can do to make sure anchor holds in a strong current.
Choose the right anchor. A heavy anchor with a large fluke and using an all chain rode helps. Look for a spot with soft or sandy bottom. Set your anchor properly by backing down hard on it.
Pay out enough chain to give you adequate scope. At least a 5:1 if space allows. Attach your snubbers to help prevent in shock loading of the anchor. Once your anchored its a good idea to monitor your anchor and make sure that it is holding, especially during the tidal shifts.
