What is abdominal flap for breast reconstruction? As you all know breast cancer is a very common disease and you may know that many people have had breast amputations done to control the breast cancer. The treatment options for a breast cancer are very many and one of them is what is known as abdominal flap or the DIEP flap. What this does is to take skin and fat from the lower abdomen. Most women have a lot of skin and fat in the lower abdomen which can be used to reconstruct the breast especially so if the breast size is moderate to a large size. So this skin and fat is taken along with its blood supply which is based on one of the arteries and veins of the abdominal wall. The fat and skin is shaped into a breast to match the opposite side and then the artery and veins are attached to one of the chest wall artery and veins so that the breast looks whole again. It is symmetrical to the opposite side, it looks natural, it feels natural and as a secondary procedure for this reconstructed breast six months one year down the line when everything settle down you can opt for a nipple and areolar reconstruction so that it matches the opposite side. As a standard practice we don't do the nipple areolar reconstruction at the same time because as you all know there is a role for gravity to play we may not be able to get the same level and direction of the nipple areola and it is always better to do it once the reconstructive breast settles down in its new place and so that we have good idea of the symmetry, the size and volume. Doing all this will help you look have a more natural looking breast. In some cases if the asymmetry is too much your plastic surgeon may advise you to undergo breast lift on the opposite side to match the reconstructed breast so that the both sides look very similar. So breast reconstruction has got very many options. Please speak to your plastic surgeon and they will guide you properly.
