The 2024 Toyota LandCruiser 70 Series has had a change of heart – literally. While the 4.5-litre turbo-diesel V8 (and its five-speed manual gearbox) is still being built, such is its popularity that new orders cannot be placed as the Japanese brand works through its backlog. Which leads us to the new but familiar 2.8-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder (and its six-speed torque-converter automatic transmission) that has just burst onto the scene.
Despite being half of the size of its popular sibling, the new engine actually offers substantially more maximum torque (+70Nm) alongside similar peak power. Point being, it offers significantly better bang for your buck, even if it can't measure up to the sentimental value of the bent eight.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Contributing Journalist Marcus Craft puts the new LandCruiser 70 Series' Workmate cab chassis through its paces in an off-road test.
