Using a singing straw to aid in singing and voice training (known as straw phonation or SOVT) can provide many benefits, like easier vocal production, strengthened vocal coordination and muscles, and protection of the vocal folds. However, there is no one-size-fits-all approach to straw phonation. The ideal straw for SOVT work will depend on your individual anatomy and voice.
In this video, I explain how factors like your lung capacity, vocal tract size, pitch, vocal fatigue, hydration, skill level, and hormones can affect the voice and therefore what type of "singing straw" would work well. I break down how to assess your own voice to determine the right straw for optimal vocal function. My goal is to help you individualise your straw phonation practice so you can strengthen your voice in a healthy, sustainable way.
