We are surrounded by saltwater playgrounds. From ocean dunes to the Peconic Estuary and its myriad creeks and ponds. However, in late fall 2021 we started to wonder about the headwaters that feed into the Peconic Bay.

The Peconic River is the longest river on Long Island, beginning in bogs and wetlands in the PIne Barrens and draining into the Peconic Estuary.

The Peconic River Blueway Trail is being developed to enable paddling from the headwaters to the bay.

The slow moving river is a breeze to paddle, the portage points are well marked and largely well-built. There is a pizza and a beer opportunity about halfway through!
