'Batman- Gotham by Gaslight ', written by Brian Augustyn and drawn by Mike Mignola was released in 1989. The one-shot graphic novel was an instant success and spawned DC's 'Elsewor' label, a line of stories out of continuity with popular character set in different times and places for more original story telling. A sequel, 'Master of the Future', also written by Augustyn was released in 1991, and an animated adaptation in 2018.

Set in Victorian-era Gotham City, a killer of prostitutes, calling himself Jack the Ripper, is on the loose, and the World's Greatest Detective, Batman must solve who it is before he kills again.
