Justice Secretary Shabana Mahmood was sworn in as Lord Chancellor, becoming the first observant Muslim and the second woman to hold the historic post.
The Labour minister and Birmingham Ladywood MP, 43, swore her oath of office on the Quran during a ceremony at the Royal Courts of Justice in central London.
The role dates back to at least 1066 and holders are responsible for the administration of the courts and legal aid, as well as protecting and upholding the independence of the judiciary.
New Attorney General Richard Hermer KC and Solicitor General Sarah Sackman were also sworn in alongside Ms Mahmood.
The occasion was marked by speeches from the Lady Chief Justice, Baroness Carr, the new Attorney General, Chair of the Bar Sam Townend KC and President of the Law Society Nick Emmerson.
